With nine stories—five of which have never before been published—and an exclusive never-before-seen excerpt from Marissa Meyer’s upcoming novel, Heartless, about the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, Stars Above is essential for fans of the bestselling and beloved Lunar Chronicles.

*INSERT HAPPY DANCE*
First of all, I want to say how happy I’ve become to know that this is not going to be the last that we’ll read of The Lunar Chronicles because there’s going to be a graphic novel about IKO and also the rest of the crew will also have an appearance in there. yey!
The Lunar Chronicles as a whole is a wonderful blend of romance, sci fi, fantasy and a fairytale retelling with a superb twist. I absolutely loved and enjoyed the epilogue after Winter and every nine stories included in here. Reading Stars Above, will make you reminisce the events that occurred in the previous book because at this point, you knew how things would end for them and what would happen even the young version of our heroes in this book don’t know yet. And it would make you miss all the characters to death to the point that you’d want to reread The Lunar Chronicles AGAIN! huhu if only I don’t have a long list of TBR.
Cinder and her crew will always be the “best friend goals.” Their friendship is really heartwarming and beautiful. If there’s one thing common for all our heroes in here is that, they were all different from the rest. At some point, they all felt unwanted and that maybe, they were born to offer something more.
I want to hug all of them and of course Marissa Meyer for writing this wonderful story. Her style of writing is so engaging. AND THE STORY IS MAGNIFICENT IN EVERY WAY. I think I have found my favorite series!!
Now let’s breakdown my thoughts about the nine stories included in here. I’ll try to avoid spoilers for those who haven’t read. PS: I’LL TRY 😛
The Keeper: It’s the first story in the book. It is about how Cinder came into the care of Michelle Benoit and how young Scarlet has come to live with her grandmere. This part of the story is really a heart wrenching read. We just know Michelle Benoit by name and by some very little appearance of her in Scarlet book. But in here, we get to see the before, the time when she was a bit younger. Here we came to see how she had become a a pilot that went with the earthens in Luna and how her little “romance” with the Lunar doctor Logan, shaped her life. Reading this made Michelle came to life in our minds also Scarlet’s grandfather, Logan and as well as how Garan has been chosen to take care of Cinder. We finally got the answers we were all curious about. How did Garan from New Beijing has been in charge to take care of young Princess Selene which is in Paris.
I really felt sad over this because we know what their fates were. There were plans originally made previously when Cinder was first taken into Michelle’s house but in the end was cancelled because of some things. I really liked how Michelle has grown attached and named the girl Cinder. “She survived the fire, and reborn from cinders.”
Also I have grown to admire Scarlet in this story. She’s such a brave kid and now I knew where her bravery came from.
THE GLITCHES: In this we have seen the first time Cinder was taken into the Linh’s household. Also the answer to why did Garan adopted her in the first place. It’s really great to see the first meeting of Cinder and her step sisters. In here, we have learned that Peony has been her best friend before IKO was even repaired. This part of the book introduced us to young Cinder who has no recollection of her past and felt useless because of what Adri has been telling her. This is also the time in which she discovered that she has a skills of a mechanic and was demonstrated when she first repaired IKO. Also before I have no idea the root of Adri’s loathe for Cinder but in here, we get to see where she’s coming from. She blames Cinder for every unfortunate events that happened in their family.
“I have a glitch, too. Sometimes I forget that I’m not human. I don’t think that happens to most androids.”
and this wonderful fan art I’ve found on goodreads is really wonderful to see. IKO made Cinder realized that maybe she has a glitch too. She can’t cry.
THE QUEEN’S ARMY: It is mostly about the mutant soldiers that Levana is trying to make. Here, we have seen why Wolf is called Alpha. And what alteration they did to him. Also we have found out that he too thinks differently. He doesn’t want to be the puppet of Levana. Also I am reminded how Scarlet’s presence later on, can make a huge difference in Wolf’s life.
CARSWELL GUIDE TO BEING LUCKY: Introduced us to young Carswell. This is one of my favorites in the book because we know so little about our captain. But this story helped us have a background what he’s like when he was younger and still he did not disappoint. He’s still the funny, inquisitive and foolhardy hero. And even as a child he’s so stubborn and has his own set of rules and it’s clear in his mind that he is destined to be a captain of his own Rampion.
THE LITTLE ANDROID: This is the saddest story in this book. It’s a retelling of the original story of the little mermaid. The mermaid who sacrificed her happiness and life for her prince thus turning her into a sea foam. But this time we meet android Mech6.0 who saved the life of a handsome young engineer resulting to the wreckage of her body. Her mechanic discovered a glitch in her system. Androids aren’t not meant to develop unpractical reasoning or near-emotional responses…let alone fall in love.
AFTER SUNSHINE PASSES BY: Is a story of 9-year old Cress how she ended up in the satellite and also what mistreatment shells get in Luna. This book made me hate Sybil Mira even more. I felt sad for our poor Cress. Good thing there is always a happily ever after.
THE PRINCESS AND THE GUARD: I LOVE THIS STORY SO MUCH. Tbh, this made me love Winter even more and I also grew an appreciation toward Jacin. In here, we have seen the real reason why Winter didn’t use her gift. Even it was mention in the Winter book, this prequel explained everything. And I’ve felt sympathetic with her but grew admiration at the same time because what she did was selflessly brave. And in this story, I started to ship Winter and Jacin harder than before. Now I’ve felt chemistry between them and I take back what I said on my Winter review that I did not much care about their romance. Now I do. Both of them sacrificed a great deal of themselves and who they are in order to protect something.
THE MECHANIC: KAI THOUGHT THE MECHANIC WAS AN OLD GUY. HAHA. He can’t bring himself to believe that the best mechanic in New Beijing is a young teenage girl who seemed not far from his age. In this prequel to Cinder, we see Kai and Cinder’s first meeting from Kai’s perspective. AND I LOVED IT. It’s always nice to see the other person’s perspective over the other. Now we have known that not only Cinder was intimidated, but also Kai because Cinder is truly intriguing and beautiful in her own way. #KAIDER
SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW: Is the much awaited epilogue to WINTER. We get to see our characters once more few years or two years to be exact, after the events in Winter. We have seen how their past experiences made them better people and accomplish big things. I’m not going to spoil it here so go read it! And also, stay tuned for the wedding of the century which is undeniably sweet with a twist. ❤
I couldn’t be more thankful that Marissa Meyer has given us a chance to get to know the characters more in a deeper sense. Reading Stars Above made us connect with each of them in a stronger bond. The stories in here made us understand them. And why they are the way they are, why they did the things they did. It’s really beyond beautiful. And you’ll be surprised how the characters in The Lunar Chronicles can easily be your best buddies!
The Lunar Chronicles as a whole is an unforgettable series. I do recommend it to everyone and I promise, it’s going to be the best decision ever.
